From the Saddle
by Kristi McCrindle, editor
Well hello and welcome to all our readers! This is a totally new feature, designed by hiway16's creator, Jim Easterday.

He has asked me to moderate the discussion group (Horse Talk) and keep up a weekly updated column, and this week is our first!

Some of you local equestrians may already know me. My name is Kristi McCrindle and I currently live in Southbank, which is on the south side of Francois Lake.

For three years prior to moving here, my partner and I lived in Smithers, where I became heavily involved in the Northern Saddle Club and Bulkley Valley Reiners. Since moving, I have remained involved in those two clubs, and have also joined the Lakes District Cattle Penning Association and Tweedsmuir Cavaliers Saddle Club.

I've owned horses for 15 years, and I currently own two grade QH geldings which I have shown mainly western and reining, as well as gymkhana and team penning. The one is leased out to a youth rider from Smithers, and the other has become my main show horse. I also currently have two yearlings, one a registered Paint, the other a grade QH, and recently purchased a cutting bred QH filly.

Living in Southbank has given me the distinct advantage of living near Saddle Tramp Training Stables, who have a lovely indoor arena, allowing me to ride year round.

Also through the Foote family, I have been introduced further to the worlds of dressage, hunters and jumpers, of which I still know little about, but we can certainly discuss them here!

We ask you to send in your questions about any sort of horse related topic - horse shows, training tips, stable management, health care. If it's horse related, I will try to answer it.

I may not always know the answer, but I can research with local experts such as our vets, farriers and trainers to give you an idea of how to deal with your concerns.
Questions will be addressed in upcoming issues, feel free to email me at kristi@hiway16.com.

Another section of the Northern Horse page is the schedule of events, which I hope to keep up-to-date with the contributions from you, the equestrians of the community. Shows, clinics, meetings, wind-ups, they all have their place on our calendar. With your help, we can keep the area informed of what is happening.
We will also have a section dedicated to show results, again depending on you, the reader, to send in results and photos, which can be added to the Photo Gallery.

We welcome you to use the free classifed ads to advertise your equines and equestrian equipment.

Well, we hope you enjoy the new page, and till next week - happy riding!

Equipment
This column is for us to discuss various bits and pieces of equine related equipment.

Wondering what bit to use on your horse?

Trying to find an item of tack and not sure where to look?

Would you like to know which type of saddle will best fit your horse? Ask me and we'll try to find the answer for you!

Everyone knows that you should feed more hay in the winter right? Hmmm, maybe not everyone knows that... that's the purpose of this part of the column.

Here we can share various feed and care tips to keep your northern horse happy and healthy, year round.

Like did you know that the average horse will drink more water in the winter if it is warmed slightly? And it is true that in cold weather, horses should be given more hay, as the digestion process is what warms them up.

If you have tips you'd like to share with other equestrians, please mail them to kristi@hiway16.com

Well, this column is going to need lots of input from you readers! I do have the advantage of having ridden quite a few disciplines, but I am the first to admit I know very little about dressage, jumping and english (though I have been seen a few times in the english show pen!).

We'd love to share your stories about tips and techniques, either for the show pen, or regular riding, or even just around the barn... from how to achieve a perfect sidepass in a trail class, to how to successfully clip your horse, to how to tie your horse safely at the fence... this column is only limited by your imaginative questions and suggestions!

Events: please contact me with your events, we'd love to add them to our schedule!

Western, English, Penning or Trail riding, all equine sports have a voice on Northern Horse.
